Day 8 finds us on Espanola Island.
It was here that we got a first hand lesson about the power of the sea. After breakfast, we had a very wet landing at Gardiner Bay. Patrick has a great series of photos showing people scrambling off of the panga at the beach among rough waves. You can see people moving as fast as they could toward the beach as a large wave approaches from the distance. We see the panga actually flipping over in the rough surf. Great pictures, Patrick!
Oooops! That outboard motor is headed for the shop. After the excitement, and the panga was safely towed back to the boat for some serious work, we explored the beach and walked the trail around Gardner Bay. There we saw Galapagos sea lions galore and an interesting subspecies of marine iguana that makes its home on Espanola Island. It is distinguished by its red blotches over most parts of its body. After lunch, the boat had moved to Punta Suarez at another part of the island. We then took the longest hike of the trip, three hours, over about two and one half miles of very rough lava. We took it slowly with many planned stops where were observed the whole range of wildlife.
