IMMIGRATION TO USA
15 Nov 1901 to 29 Nov 1901
Londonderry, Ireland to Ellis Island, New York
April 26, 2007

I recently became aware of certain documents in the British National Archives that have just become available via the internet at http://www.findmypast.com.
A search of their passenger lists of long distance voyages leaving the British Isles from 1890 to 1910 showed a Julia Simpson as a passenger leaving Londonderry, Ireland on 15 Nov 1901. Unfortunately, that was all that was available without purchasing access to their individual records. Since everything else to date has failed, it seemed reasonable to make a payment to them and hope for the best.

After accessing the passenger record for Julia Simpson, it appeared by her age (25 years) that she might be the right person. I then purchased access to the original departing passenger list. The passenger list was from the Anchor Line of Mail Steamships, on their Schedule B, Form of Passenger List. The ship was the Astoria.

The Astoria sailed from Glasgow, Scotland on 14 Nov 1901 to Londonderry, Ireland with approximately 222 passengers. At Londonderry, Ireland an additional 92 passengers boarded. The passenger list of those passengers boarding at Londonderry, Ireland consisted of three pages. The Astoria then departed from Londonderry, Ireland on 15 Nov 1901 and arrived at Ellis Island, New York, USA, on 29 Nov 1901.

Learning the Astoria had departed for New York sent me back to the Ellis Island immigrant records at http://www.EllisIsland.com in an attempt to discover why Julia Simpson and the other Astoria passengers were not shown as Ellis Island immigrants.

I again searched the Ellis Island records using various name spellings in an attempt to locate this Julia Simpson. There is no record of her arrival. I then searched for Anna Preston, the first passenger listed on page one of the three page Londonderry to New York departing passenger list. The record of Anna Preston arriving at Ellis Island was located. A review of the original Astoria's manifest showed that page one contained the information on thirty passengers (Anna Preston to Hugh Doherty). The lower left hand side of the manifest was torn or otherwise damaged so that Annie McHugh, on line 15, was the last full name that can be read. A search of Ellis Island records showed Annie McHugh arriving at Ellis Island. Although other partial names were legible, none of them were shown in the Ellis Island records.

On page two of the Astoria departing passenger list from Londonderry, there was a total of fifty six passengers listed. The first passenger was Robert Nethery and the last was Agnes Hassondon. A search of Ellis Island immigrant records failed to document the arrival of these people. I then searched for several others on that page and could not locate any of them in the Ellis Island records.

Passenger number nine on page two was:
Julia Simpson, an Irish female, age 25, a Seamstress.

Page three of the departing from Londonderry passenger list identified six departing passengers. None of them were located in the Ellis Island records.

I then did a search of all documents generated for that voyage by the Astoria and in the possession of Ellis Island. There were twenty four pages. The pages and their contents are:
Page 1:Title page for Astoria, Volume 388, 6 sheets
Page 2:Immigration Service Photography Certification sheet
Page 3:Affidavit of Ship's Master - Londonderry, Ireland
Page 4:Affidavit of Ship's Master, page 2
Page 5:Manifest of Aliens - USA Citizens
Page 6:Affidavit of Ship's Master and Ship's Surgeon
Page 7:Passenger Manifest (page 1 starting w/Anna Preston)
Page 8:Duplicate of Page 7
Page 9:Supplement of Alien Passengers
Page 10:Affidavit of Ship's Master - Glasgow, Scotland
Page 11; Passenger Manifest - Glasgow (16 passengers)
Page 12;Affidavit of Ship's Surgeon
Page 13:Affidavit of Ship's Master
Page 14: Passenger Manifest - Glasgow
Page 15;Supplement of Alien Passengers
Page 16:Affidavit of Ship's Master
Page 17:Passenger Manifest - Glasgow
Page 18:Supplemental Affidavit of Alien Passengers
Page 19:Affidavit of Ship's Master and Ship's Surgeon
Page 20:Passenger Manifest - Glasgow
Page 21:Supplement of Alien Passengers
Page 22:Detained Aliens list
Page 23:Aliens Held for Special Inquiry list
Page 24: Untitled sheet containing unidentified numbers and initials.

I noticed that the passengers shown on the departing passenger list, boarding at Londonderry were identical to the passenger list of the passengers arriving at Ellis Island. The names were in the same order and the same number of passengers per sheet. It appears that the Astoria crew copied the names from the departing passenger list onto the arriving passenger manifest. Following this logic, and knowing that ship arrival passenger manifests only contain thirty names, there should have been a total of four manifest pages of passengers who departed from Londonderry. Ellis Island only has the first page. The remaining three pages, along with the identities and other data about these passengers, are missing.

Based upon the above information, it became apparent that only a portion of the passengers listed on the first page of passengers departing from Londonderry were included in the records of Ellis Island. It appears obvious that those passengers below line #15 of the first page, along with all passengers listed on pages 2 and 3 of the passengers departing from Londonderry were not included in the Ellis Island records. This appears to be due to page one of the passenger arriving from Londonderry manifest being damaged and the remaining pages damaged, destroyed or missing when the ship manifests were copied and digitized for the Ellis Island records.

I for one had proceeded under the invalid assumption that the Ellis island records reflected an accurate and complete record of all immigrants processed at that site.

I am now fully confident that the Julia Simpson located on the passengers departing Londonderry, Ireland, on the ship Astoria, on 15 Nov 1901, is the same Julia Simpson we have looked for during the past several decades. It now appears the oral tradition that she immigrated in 1901 is true and adds credence to her frequent joking with my father (Albert E. Jarvis, b.17 Dec 1901) that she purposely immigrated in time to celebrate his birth.

Now we are faced with a far more difficult task of documenting the first 25 years of Julia's life and that of her parents and their families. The quest is just starting.
