 Itinerary Highlights

Thirteen Land Days

Costa Rica is at the top of the list for Adventure Travel destinations and this program seeks to show the Hosteler firsthand why that is. The country is geographically blessed with a warm climate, varrying terrain, enticing ecosystems, active geology - all within a region the size of the state of West Virginia.

The goal of this program is to energize and enliven both the body and the mind with stimulating activity, morning exercise and breathing sessions, hot springs and spa treatments, lectures on natural history and physical wellnes and a healthy dose of adventure.

The activities were chosen to help introduce the wonders and nature of Costa Rica as well as energize. Hike through tropical rainforest, swim along the coastline, kayak down a river and into the ocean, stroll through quaint towns, snorkel with the aquatic wildlife and raft down the exhillerating Sarapiquí River.

Activity Level 4

bulletTropical climate. Activities offered according to individual capabilities; less strenuous alternatives available.

San José

San José is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city located in the middle of the fertile Valle Central with a backdrop of soaring mountains – some of them volcanoes – on all sides. Since it is the country’s major transportation hub, most visitors spend some amount of time here. We suggest these activities:

bulletExplore the museums - Enjoy exhibits of pre-Hispanic cultures and modern Costa Rican art at the Museo Nacional (National Museum). Museo de Oro (Gold Museum) features gold sculpture, jewelry and other artifacts.
bulletEnjoy the markets - Peruse the variety of goods and lively activity at the Mercado Central. Visit with local artisans at the crafts fairs at La Casona and in front of the Museo Nacional.
bulletTake a stroll - Explore the galleries, cafes, and stately mansions of Barrios Amon and Otoya. Also nice are the garden paths in Parque La Sabana.

Selva Verde Private Reserve

The Reserve is situated in the lush lowlands of north central Costa Rica on a large private tract of primary and secondary tropical rainforest. This is an ideal ‘classroom’ to teach the principles of protecting the intricate balance of nature in the world's rapidly diminishing rainforest. As you walk along the Reserve’s forest trails, you may see a superb variety of wildlife including parrots, jacamars, hummingbirds, motmots, macaws, and other exotic lowland tropical birds.

The Plight of the Scarlet Macaw

Habitat loss is a major threat to this endangered species. Deforestation has reduced the habitats to just a few areas suitable for the Scarlet Macaws. Adding to the decline in population is the illegal pet trade. The birds are highly prized internationally, sometimes being sold for up to $2,500. Rescue efforts are challenged not only in protecting habitat, but finding ways to dissuade local communities to engage in poaching.

La Paz Waterfall Garden

Nestled next to a river and a series of five magnificent waterfalls, this idyllic garden spot offers trails, orchids, butterflies, and hummingbirds for up close observation of Costa Rican natural beauty.

For example, the Butterfly Observatory is one of the largest in the world. Butterflies flit freely about while guests walk through the specially constructed habitat. An on-site laboratory is a breeding ground for the countless species where you may observe the stages of development.

Arenal Volcano

Continuously active since 1968, Arenal is young as volcanoes go – only about 4,000 years old - and relatively small at 5,358 feet. The volcano’s eruptions can be an awe-inspiring sight especially at night. The nearly constant activity ranges from quiet eruptions marked by large mushroom-shaped clouds of ash, to explosions that send volcanic matter nearly a kilometer into the air, to booming episodes characterized by lava flow and hot, red rocks that crash down the steep gray slopes of the volcanic cone.
